Police in Eastern Province have shot dead a 42-year-old Zambia Air Force officer after suspecting him of being a criminal.
Chishimba James Bwalya, a Zambia Air Force officer at Mbala base is said to have traveled for a Golf tournament in Chipata district during which he met his fate.
And confirming the incident to the media yesterday, Eastern Province Deputy Police Commissioner Geoffrey Kunda noted that police received a report of a suspected criminal who was later identified as Bwalya of Chisha Mwamba village in Mporokoso district.
“The deceased was spotted attempting to open the Zambia Revenue Authority cash office around 03 hours. A police officer on duty, upon seeing the man who by then tried to escape, fired two warning shots and one of the stray bullets hit him on his back and came out through the stomach,” explained Kunda.
And Chipata Golf Course Captain Edward Phiri said the deceased was a dedicated golf player who was in the district for the Chipata Gold Union tournament and only received information on Sunday that he was shot dead by the police.
“The entire golf family is saddened by his death as he was scheduled to represent the country at one of the international golf tournaments,” said Phiri.
