The policeman who shot dead a Zambia Air Force officer in Chipata has been arrested and charged with murder following a failed attempt at a cover up.

Eastern Province Deputy Police Commissioner Geoffrey Kunda confirmed the arrest of the police officer whose identity has so far been kept under wraps.

James Bwalya Chishimba, an avid golfer from Mbala, was on Tuesday shot dead by the unnamed police officer around 03:00 hours in a case police later tried to cover up.

Police had initially claimed the 42-year-old Chishimba, who was in Chipata for a golf tournament, had been caught trying to break into the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) cash office. Eastern Province Deputy Police Commissioner Geoffrey Kunda told journalists that the Chishimba had tried to escape, forcing the policeman who was guarding the premises to discharge warning shots, one of which accidentally hit the deceased in the back and exited from the stomach.

But a postmortem conducted at Chipata Central Hospital yesterday has seemingly foiled the Zambia Police’s attempt to cover up the murder.

According to the postmortem, Chishimba had two bullet wounds on two different parts of his body, with one hitting him on his back, which came out through the stomach and the other on his right thigh, it also shows that the deceased had fractured 6th and 7th ribs.

And the coroner’s authority of burial signed by magistrate Moses Mkumba Phiri states that Chishimba died from extensive liver injury with Hemo Thoray and injury to the popliteal artery.

Meanwhile, Chipata Golf Club Captain Edward Phiri has expressed concern towards the manner in which police have handled the matter.

He says that when cleaning the body of Chishimba, they discovered details, which were not disclosed by police.

Phiri noted with sadness that the police service who are supposed to protect the public were trying to conceal the truth behind the shooting incident.

James Chishimba was a dedicated golfer with more than 54 trophies to his name and was reportedly scheduled to represent Zambia at an upcoming international competition.
